Biography:

Sugar Ray Leonard was born on May 17, 1956, in Wilmington, North Carolina. When he was three his family moved to Washington D.C and they settled permanently in Palmer Park, Maryland when he was ten. He was a shy child and mostly stayed at home reading comics and playing with his dogs. His brother Roger insisted that he go to the boxing club with him and that was how he started his career.

Career:

In 1972, he boxed at the National AAU Tournament but lost. He then performed at the Eastern Olympic Trials lying about his age as he was one year younger than the minimum age allowed. He made it to the lightweight semifinals but lost there due to a controversial decision given by Greg Whaley. He won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship and National Golden Gloves and National AAU Lightweight Championships in 1973. The next year he won the National Golden Gloves and National AAU Light Welterweight Championships and won again at the Pan American Games. He joined the U.S. Olympic Team as the light welterweight representative in 1976 which is considered to be the best boxing team of the U.S in history. He won a gold medal by winning the Olympics competition.

Due to family complications, he couldn’t pursue his studies and started his professional career. He met Mike Trainer who arranged a 21k dollar investment for his career which was to be repaid with interest. His trainer and manager were the same as Muhammad Ali’s. He repaid his load after his first fight in 1977 at the Civic Center in Baltimore. The next year, he defeated two professional champions who were Floyd Mayweather and Randy Shields. He won the NABF Welterweight Championship in 1979 along with many other victories and was named “Fighter of the Year” for 1979.

He played against  Dave “Boy” Green in 1980 and won his first defense title. The same year he fought at the Olympic Stadium with Roberto Durán, The decision was in Roberto’s favor. Leonard disagreed with the decision and so a rematch occurred at the Louisiana Superdome. Leonard ended up winning the fight by a technical decision. To save his second world title in 1981, he first defeated Larry Bonds in New York. He then moved on to Kalule, competing with him in Houston, Texas. He was the two-year WBA Light Middleweight Champion but Leonard won against him. He fought against Thomas Hearns in “The Showdown”. Leonard overtook the fight and hurt Hearns and won but the decision was controversial. He was named “Fighter of the Year”, “Athlete of the Year”, and “Sportsman of the Year”.

In 1982, he defended his title and won against Bruce Finch. The same year he had eye surgery and his next fight got canceled due to it. He announced his retirement and said that he doesn’t want to box anymore. The next year, he announced that he was returning. He fought with Howard in 1984. He was knocked down by him for the first time in his professional career. He announced again that he is retiring from the sport.

In 1986, he announced that he was coming back to the ring to defeat Marvin Hagler. The fight took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, in 1987. He won the competition by a controversial decision. He announced another comeback in 1988 and fought Donny Lalonde. The fight was intense and two out of three judges gave higher scores to Leonard. He fought with Thomas Hearns to defend his WBC Super Middleweight Championship title in 1989 and did it successfully. He also won against Roberto Durán the same year. In 1990, he gave away the WBC super-middleweight title. In 1991, he lost to Terry Norris and announced his retirement again. He made his final comeback in 1996 to fight against Héctor Camacho who was a third-time world champion. He faced him in 1997 and for the first time in his career, he was knocked off. He retired after that fight. In 1997, he was voted and inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame.
