Robert Matthew known as Vanilla Ice was born on October 31, 1967, in Dallas, Texas, United States. He was given the surname of his stepfather. After his mom got divorced, he traveled a lot between Dallas and Miami. He was inspired by hip-hop from an early age. He practiced breakdancing as a teenager. He took the name “Vanilla Ice” when he became a part of the breakdance troupe. His stepdad worked in Texas so he had to move with his mother. His group named itself “The Vanilla Ice Posse”.

He broke his ankle and wasn’t interested in racing. He wanted to learn more about dancing and therefore, he started performing on the streets with his friends. He won an open mic at a nightclub and was offered by the manager if he wanted to be there regularly and he accepted the offer. Surprisingly, “Ice Ice Baby” received more attention and popularity on the radio as compared to the A-side single and Quon gave 8000 dollars for its music video. The video of the song was perceived well. He signed a record deal with SBK in 1990. SBK made a re-recorded version of “Hooked” called “To the Extreme”. The album became the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. It spent sixteen weeks on the Billboard 200 charts. Many radio stations wanted the song to be played and the album received mixed reviews.

He was a musical guest on  Saturday Night Live in 1991. He also starred in the movie “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” and called it one of the coolest experiences of his career. His next album “Extremely Live” came out the same year. It mainly received negative reviews. He then played the lead role in the SBK film “Cool as Ice”. The film grossed 638,000 dollars but got negative reviews. He received the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star.

His popularity was decreasing in the United States but he kept touring in South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. He sang in Russia in front of President Boris Yeltsin.

He took a break from music in 1993 and started jet skiing and Motocross racing. His second studio album “Mind Blowin” was released in 1994 and also received negative feedback and reviews. He resumed his motocross races and placed in the seventh position at the 2003 Suzuki Crossover challenge. His fifth studio album was “Platinum Underground” which was released in 2005. The first song that he released from that album was ‘Ninja Rap 2”. In 2007, he starred in “The Surreal Life: Fame Games” again and released his next album in 2008 called “Vanilla Ice Is Back!” with Cleopatra Records. The album was criticized by critics.
