Missy Elliot was born on July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States. She grew up as a Christian singing in the church choir. She began her career by forming an R&B group in 1991. The group was soon noticed by DeVante Swing, who paved their way forward as they moved to New York and got signed to Elektra Records and named their group “Sista”. Her next album was “Da Real World” and it was released in 1999 and featured in Mariah Carey’s single “Heartbreaker”. Her next release was her third album in 2001 called “Miss E… So Addictive”. The album was super successful with hit singles and music videos. In 2002, she co-wrote Tweet’s debut single “Oops (Oh My)”.

Her fourth album was “Under Construction” which was released in 2002 and broke records. Elliot won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance the same year. She was featured in a commercial with Madonna and later shared the stage with her on the MTV VMAs along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
